Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

By looking at other magazines such as ‘Vibe’ and ‘Kerrang!’ I have gathered information about their use of codes and conventions adapting it into my own media product. I managed to take some of their techniques and develop them adding them into my Hip-Hop and R&B magazine. An example of this is my front cover image. The camera angle and pose is an idea that I developed from the front cover of Vibe with Ciara as the subject. She also looks over her shoulder, but not at the same extent. Also, by using a sexy, beautiful, female artist I have used forms and conventions that attract the audience. Psychoanalysis show that beautiful people is a factor of attraction for other human beings, and that we look up to them as successful. This knowledge I have used to my advantage and are the background for the use of model. This I believe has enriched my front cover.

            The colours of my pages represent the two genders of which my magazine is targeted: male and female. This is something I will describe more closely further down the page.

            The Bronx challenge forms and conventions of other media products in its qualitative perspective and feature of artists that can be considered as role models. This makes The Bronx differ from a handful of music magazine’s that can be viewed as gossip magazines. The Bronx does contain gossip of some kind but the articles are of a high quality making the readers believe what is written as they are researched and proven. This is a value that the Bronx treasures and that separate the magazine from other real media products.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Each magazine has different codes and conventions that reflect the genre and the target audience. These codes and conventions can be found in the written language, font style, colours, images, etc. My target audience is teenagers and young adults who are interested in the music genre Hip-Hop and R&B. This is represented through the forms and conventions in my magazine. For example, the colours of my front page tell of a gender neutral magazine, a magazine targeted both genders. The pink colour represents women while the blue represents men. A contrast to this is the magazine ‘Spotlight,’ created by a previous AS student.

            On my contents page there is a big ‘B’ that is written as a graffiti letter. This is associated with the streets of big cities, which is exactly where Hip-Hop is born, in the Bronx. In this way one can say that the magazine represents the social group of teenagers and young adults who live in or close to the streets. The more luxurious layout of the magazine however (shown through the matching colours and quality of the articles), gives the association of teenagers and young adults who are born and raised on the streets but grown up to fame and fortune. This way the magazine is targeted both lower and middle class.

            The magazine contains both stereotypical and anti-stereotypical Hip-Hop and R&B artists. Lil’C is an artist who has her life on track. She is not pictured as an alcoholic or drug addict contrasting to the common view of successful artists. She is a positive youth making her a positive role model for the readers of the magazine. Tyson Wood on the other hand is presented in a stereotypical way. He is the artist who has been addicted to cocaine and written songs under its influence making him become famous. Also, the picture of him on the contents page tells of a stereotypical male Hip-Hop artist. The brand hat, the baggy sweater and the long ‘bling’ necklace all point in this direction. This is another way he differs from Lil’C who is presented as a more non-conventional artist with a look of “the girl next door” which immediately identifiable to the genre.

            All together these codes and conventions represent the social group of teenagers and young adults listening to Hip-Hop and R&B.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that IPC (International Publishing Company) Media would distribute my magazine should it be published. IPC media is one of the leading media institutions in the United Kingdom and has published magazines such as NME. Research show that 26 million adults read magazines published by IPC Media. IPC Media has had great success and will therefore have the experience and resources to distribute my magazine.

            The reason why I believe that IPC Media would distribute my magazine is that their only Music magazine is NME which has the male gender as their target group. Therefore I think they need a magazine that is targeted both genders. The magazine will therefore attract an audience they haven’t reached with any of their magazines before. This, I believe, is an important fact in making them want to distribute my magazine. IPC media values the fact that they have a magazine to offer people with all kinds of interests and genders. Therefore, I was to shed a light on the gap in the brands and target audiences I believe they would closely consider publishing my magazine.

            Also, IPC media magazine productions all have the lower and middle class as their target audience. This can be seen clearly on the codes and conventions on their front page as well as the price of the magazine. Since this is the same audience as my magazine are targeted I see no reason why they would not distribute it.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product is male and females from the age of 15 to 25 years old. This decision is based on my primary research showing that the majority of Hip-hop and R&B listeners are found within this age group. During my research I asked 25 random people from the age of 15 to 25 which music genre they would like to read about. 44 % of the asked wanted to read a music magazine of the Hip-Hop and R&B.

            The conventions that I have applied in my magazine suggest that the magazine is targeted for an audience of 15 to 25 years old with an aspirational age of 12 to 30.  This can be seen through the photos of the article subjects and what the article is revealing, for example drugs tell of a article the older audience while CandyGirls are targeted the younger group. One can immediately target CandyGirls as targeted the younger generation in the group name as well as the font style and colour pink in which the group name is presented behind their photo.

            The target audience within this group is lower-class and middle-class. This is clear in the use of codes and conventions of all the pages. For example, the front page has a tidy layout where the colours match and the contrasts in tone make the text easy to read. The front cover image is of good quality and is edited making the page look luxurious and professional. Therefore the page attracts the middle class. The font style used on the front cover however is in a graffiti style associated with the streets where the lower class audience lives. This use of font styles therefore makes it clear that the magazine is not targeted the upper-class. 

            This I have done deliberately since this social group is more likely to have a part time job and in this way earn their income. Therefore they have their own money to spend as they like. Another reason for selecting this age group is that between school and work the audience needs a diversion. This diversion could be my magazine.

 

How did you attract/address your audience?

I addressed my audience by the use of lexical choices that is known to the hip-hop and R&B community, e.g. “The honky horse,” “off the chain,” “mag,” “no.1”” “cease the moment” and “off the hook.” The headlines on my front cover and contents page looks like graffiti helping them to identify their favourite genre. Another factor that addressed my audience was the photos. The photos showed the genre as well as it attracted the audience, both men and female. The use of different, contrasting colours draws in the audience triggering their interest.  

            It was my research into similar products that showed me the importance of language and emphasizing artist’s names. It was an important factor in the audience identifying the genre of the magazine. By looking at the magazine VIBE I saw how they used a sexy female as the front cover subject to attract the audience. Therefore I adapted this into my own magazine as I saw how the image of a female not only draws men’s attention but also mine as a woman.

            During my secondary research I also picked up on the use of colour. The background always contrasted to the use of font colour so that the text would be easy to read. I also released how the different types of colours all create a different response in the reader. For example, colour psychoanalysis show that pink is a colour of universal love, a quieter version of red which is the colour who carries the strongest reaction form humans. By adding pink to my front page it tells about love. The fact that Lil’C is wearing the pink dress tells the reader that the article about her contains information about her love life. At the same time pink is a colour that is associated with femininity telling the female audience that this magazine is targeted for them. Blue however is a colour that is often associated with boys. In this way the use of colour both attracts and addresses the target audience. To make sure that my research and own development was correct and created the wanted effect on the audience I asked 10 students in 6-form which gender and age group they thought the magazine was targeted. The students where asked two questions and were given three alternatives. 90 % labelled the magazine targeted both genders while 100% targeted the magazine to the age group of 15-25 years. In this way the result indicated that the codes and conventions in the use of colour are correct.

            Another way in which I attracted and addressed my target audience was through font styles and magazine name. As previously stated above the use of graffiti looking font styles is representing the social group of my target audience as well as their social class.

            The use of photo subjects is another way in which I addressed and attracted my audience. By featuring successful young adult I attracted my target audience as well as addressing them. Through the images in my magazine the audience was able to identify the age group of the magazine. This is seen in photos in which there is obvious that none of the artists represented is over the age of 25.

 

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the process of constructing my own media magazine I have learnt how to manipulate and edit images by the use of Photoshop. By using a digital camera I have learnt how different camera shots create different effects. For example the by using a mid-shot on the front cover I have managed to capture the needed bodymass in order to show that Lil’C is looking behind her shoulder. Also, by using a mid-shot I have captured the face expression creating the associations of Lil’C leading the audience into the magazine.

            I have also learnt how to make use of the different features of Desktop Publisher using this knowledge to my advantage allowing myself to use features such as removing the background of photos.

            I have also used excel to make diagrams and tables for my questionnaire enabling me to make out the percentage of yes, no’s and maybe’s giving a clear view of my audience’s attention.

            The use of the different software packages has allowed me to produce a product that fits the need and expectations of my target audience. For example, without Desktop Publisher I would not have been able to move images and textboxes around as freely or use the many other advantages of this specific software package.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

By looking back at my preliminary task I notice how much I have learnt during the process of making a magazine. I am now aware of how to use codes and conventions to attract and trigger the interest of the audience. If the codes and conventions are properly targeted these can trigger the subconscious mind of the audience into purchasing a product. However, this can only be done as long as there is communication between the developer and the audience at all stages of the process. If not the codes and conventions will not be as strong and therefore not as successful as hoped. Therefore I have been careful to communicate with fellow students during my development in order to create a product that is targeted this age group.

            This knowledge has made me aware of the huge role media have in our everyday lives, a role that many do not acknowledge. It is this lack of knowledge that makes it possible to “manipulate” their mind into thinking that they need this product. By having this knowledge I am aware of the media’s role and will therefore not be as influenced. At the same time I have been able to adapt this knowledge into my own magazine.

            Also, through the process I have learnt how proper planning and careful research is necessary to create a media product. I now understand the huge cost of time and human resources in order to create a media product and how every detail of the product is carefully planned. It is these small details that build the codes and conventions and talk to the unconscious mind.

            This process has made me more aware of a target audience and how everything has to be correctly targeted to make a magazine successful. If the magazine does not manage to target the magazine correctly this will create a major economical loss. It is therefore important that the genre, gender and age group is correctly fitted. To ensure this there has to be communication between the developers and the audience at all stages of the process. This communication is crucial in order to create a successful product. This communication has caused me to learn the importance of draft and redraft the product in order to produce the best outcome possible. Without the feedback from teachers and fellow students my magazine would have not have been as successful as it turned out to become.

What decisions will I have to make?

I will have to decide which colours to use, which style, which background/picture, magazine name, what kind of articles, target audience, genre, how many pages, logo, gender, how often it should be published, contents etc.

            One of the decisions I have to make is whether I will have a gift in my magazine. By looking at my questionnaire it is clear that the readers would like a gift. This gift can be a poster, CD etc. Adding a gift to my magazine would cost more money so I would have to make sure that the extra investment will pay off.

Based on the result of the questionnaire I made the decision to add a gift to my magazine. To save expenses the gift will be a poster of the artist featured in the double spread. Hopefully this will be a factor able to persuade the target audience to buy my magazine.

How will research help me make decisions?

Research help the researcher understand and connect with the target audience. This understanding and connection will result in articles, name and a magazine layout that will draw in the audience.

            I will focus my research on secondary and quantitative research. This way I will save time that can be invested in more urgent and important matters. However, I will also carry out some primary and qualitative research/analysis. By doing this I will make sure there is interaction between researcher and target audience. This is crucial for making the right decisions for the magazine and to understand what the audience wants.

When planning my magazine I wanted to make a magazine from a genre I personally listen to. By doing this I will have a broader perspective and an understanding of what the audience want in a magazine. I can use my own experience and knowledge to my advantage to make my magazine more appealing and therefore more successful.

            The questionnaire showed that both Techno and House, and Hip-Hop and R&B are the most popular genres. Out of the 25 asked in my questionnaire, 10 would like to read about a Techno and House magazine, while 11 would want to read about a Hip-Hop and R & B magazine. Since the result was so close I had to consider other factors in the decision. During my primary research I picked up that the Hip-Hop and R&B listeners seemed more willing to buy a magazine from the genre and looked positively on the idea of getting more options on the shelves. Therefore I want Hip-Hop and R&B to be the genre of my magazine.

 

Who is the target audience?

I chose to centre my magazine on both men and women. This decision was made based on the questionnaire results. The questionnaire showed that Hip-Hop and R & B was the most popular genre. It also showed that both men and female listen to this genre and would like to have another magazine on the market. They felt that there was not enough variety of Hip-Hop and R&B magazine’s on the shelves so I decided to try and give them another option.

How old is my target audience?

My target audience is the age group 15 – 25. This decision is based on my own age. By making a magazine for an audience in my age group I will have a broader perspective of what the readers want, then if I would to make I magazine for an older age group. This will be positive for my magazine in the way that I would sell more copies and therefore earn more money.

 

Does the world need another Hip-Hop and R&B magazine?

By looking at the questionnaire result it is clear that the audience want another magazine from this genre. It also became clear that people want more music magazines in the shelves.

What will be the name of my magazine?

When planning my magazine, one of the first things I had to find out was what I wanted to name my magazine. I then made this list of suggestions to help me come to a decision:

  • Listen
  • Beat
  • Heat
  • The Bronx (this is where Hip-Hop started in 1970)
  • MCing (another word for rapping)
  • The descent (hip-hop originally come from African music)
  • Rhythm

 

After making this list it became clear which name would fit the best. The Bronx was the name I preferred but to make sure nobody had used it before I went online to investigate if the name was available. I did not make a questionnaire to ask my audience which name they would prefer as I made this decision based upon my own experience, preference and knowledge.

“The Bronx” is a county in the state of New York City. All sources point to the Bronx as the origin of Hip-hop. Therefore this would sum up what the magazine is about. The name will appeal to the target audience and they will immediately know the genre of the magazine. The name is relatively short and therefore easy to remember. Of all the names on the list this name would encapsulate the genre.

My questionnaire analysis showed that my target audience prefer a magazine on 25-30 pages. They wanted to feel that they got something for their money. The outcome supported my own preconceived ideas in that they would have a reason for buying my magazine and in making this decision contents matters.

My magazine will cost £ 2.50. This price is based on the pages of the magazine. When making this decision I increased the cost by one pound more than what my target audience wanted. By looking at the other results it became clear that the quality my target audience wanted could not be reconciled with the amount of money they would like to pay for it. They would be more likely to buy the magazine when the price is £ 2.5 because that would result in better articles, layout, colour, paper quality and gifts. Based on own background research the audience will pay for quality and not quantity.

The target audience was very clear in how often they would buy a music magazine. Some wanted to buy one every week but the majority preferred a monthly magazine. By publishing the magazine every month the issue will reach a larger group of people than a weekly magazine. This will also save more money than a weekly magazine. The need for new articles, layouts and photo shoot’s are only monthly and this will save a large amount of money in the long run. Another benefit of making the magazine monthly would be extra time to make a quality magazine. More time would mean that the articles would be better thought trough and small details would be added. The chance of unnecessary mistakes would also be smaller. Therefore the magazine will be published monthly. 

What will go into my magazine?

In this question my audience could tick as many options as preferred so that I could see clearly what articles where preferred over the other. For example it became clear that a festival was not interesting for the majority of target audience. When getting the result it was possible to add the preferred articles together. This way I knew what my double spread would be based on.

Front cover

In the planning of my front cover I took inspiration from the music magazines ‘MOJO’ and ‘Vibe‘. By looking at the use of codes and conventions on their front covers I have been able to adapt this information making my front cover layout more successful.

Lil’C is the subject of my double spread and will therefore appear on the front cover. The image will be a close-up with a high camera angel looking a little bit down on the artist. This will create a more dramatic effect making her look vulnerable.  This is an effect that will attract the male audience as they will connect it to something sexual. They way Lil’C will be looking over her shoulder into the camera will make her eyes look wide and blue. This will draw the audience’s attention to the eyes giving them an impression of her telling them: “follow me.” This will encourage the reader to follow her into the magazine and influence their decision to buy it. Maria’s lips will be pinkish red, the same colour as her dress and cheeks. These matching colours make her blue eyes really stand out and attract even more attention. This will emphasize the feeling of sexuality.

            The font colours of the front page are all represented in the image. This gives tidy and luxurious associations as the layout will match giving it a professional look. The background will be black as this will draw more attention to the image and text that will be in: blue/grey, pinkish red, grey and white. This will make the text stand out making everyone capable of reading the contents. The different colours contrast to each other making the front cover more interesting.

            To emphasize the wanted areas of the subheadings the font size will be enlarged. This is an effect that will be used on Lil’C’s name, created using the web site: http://www.dafont.com/ The text will then be pasted into paint where the colour is altered before it is pasted into the front cover. The colour of the text will be blue/grey to draw out the colour of Lil’C’s eyes.

            The name of the magazine will be drawn by hand and painted in a graffiti style by me personally. The graffiti is associated with the streets of big cities, which is exactly where Hip-Hop is born, in the Bronx. Therefore the writing represents the name of the magazine. The paint will be acrylic making the letters look like graffiti. This will make it possible for the audience to identify the genre. The light grey colour will be in different shades making the letters look like original graffiti that could have been seen on a wall. The grey colour will make the letters pop out of the black background and is a colour that is associated with both genders.

            Since the magazine is not known by the population it will cover a part of Lil’C’s head. This contrasts to the conventions of Vibe and MOJO where the image covers the magazine name. For my magazine this would create a negative effect since the readers might not have been able to identify the name.

            The magazine’s tagline will be a header at the top of the page saying: UK’s number 1 Hip-hop and R&B magazine!” This is a factor of persuasion as well as a feature enabling the audience to identify the magazine if the codes and conventions on the front cover do not succeed.  The magazine will also have a footer where the competition will be represented, saying: “WIN! VIP tickets to Flo-Rida London 25th may 2010.” This gives the reader a view of a ‘bargain,’ a way for them to gain something by purchasing the magazine. The name of Flo-Rida is known all over the world as a rapper involved in Hip-Hop and R&B productions and is therefore another factor enabling the audience to identify the genre. “WIN!” will be bold and written with big letters making it stand out while the rest of the text is in the font style Palantino Linotype in the size 20. By making the font colour pinkish red the text will be clear and visible. This will draw the audience’s attention to the wanted part of the sentence making sure that the customer won’t miss a important factor of persuasion.

Further down the page it says “November’s top ten.” This sub heading is in the colours light grey and white. This makes the text really stand out on the black background. Behind the text saying: “top ten,” there will be a big number “10” in dark pink. This number has also been created on the website: www.dafont.com, making the genre identifiable.  This gives the front cover a unique look using a different technique.

The next sub heading will be the interview with the heroin addictive artist Tyson Woods. Since he is famous his name will be in a light grey tone making it eye-catching. Underneath there will be a quote saying “the honky horse made me famous.” This quote will trigger the target audience’s attention making them unable to not buy the magazine. The lexical choice used in this quote is done deliberately to address my audience. “The honky horse” is an expression used by the R&B and Hip-Hop community as another word for cocaine. Not only do I address my audience by using this expression, I also protect the innocence of children. They would most likely not know what the Honky Horse means and therefore not be influenced by their ‘rolemodel.’ In this way the written code and convention serve a multiple purpose.

On the bottom of the page the main article with Lil’C will be presented. Underneath her name it will say “NEW album, NEW hit single and the truths.”  The italic writing will suggest that she wrote it herself making the reader feel like they already know something about the artist. The way the magazine tells the audience that they will get to know all the new events in her life will make it highly difficult to resist buying the magazine. The font style will be the same as the rest of the front cover: Palatino Linotype. The font colour will be blue to go with the style of her name. Over Lil’C’s name it will say “Off the hook!” This text is in the size 28 and the colour white to draw the readers’ attention, to show that the audience cannot miss out on this article. Therefore the customer should buy the magazine at once.

At the bottom of the page in the right corner there will be a barcode. Underneath the bar code there will be the magazine item number, month it is published, the price and the web site of the magazine giving all the needed information. By just writing the issue release month instead of the release date the reader will understand that the magazine is published monthly. With this knowledge the customer will expect it to be more expensive than a weekly magazine as well as containing less human errors and quality articles.

Together all the codes and conventions on the front page will make it extremely difficult for the target audience to resist purchasing the magazine giving them a view that their life will be improved by reading the contents.

Contents Page

During the planning of my contents page I looked at the magazines Vibe’ and MOJO’ collecting ideas I could adapt into my own and develop.  

The front cover is the colours pink, black and grey. Therefore this will be the colours of the contents page. The page will contain a big letter “B” in the same graffiti style as the front cover. The “N’s” in “Contents” are drawn as an arrow pointing down towards the text on the page. The codes and conventions this written text tells the audience is to look further down on the page and read the contents. The colour of the ‘B’ will be different shades of blue in the same style as the front cover. The colour will match the font colour of the text on the page. This will create the same luxurious and professional associations as the front cover.  At the left side of the big B there will be written “The Bronx” in a vertical line. Since the magazine is new and not commonly known this is necessary to remind the readers what magazine they are reading.        

The article content of the magazine together with the competitions is divided into two main groups: “sweets” and “news.” This will mate the page look tidy. “News” and “Sweets” will be in the font type Arial black, in the size 28, in the colour grey so that it stands out on the page. The description of the articles will be blue to match with the headline giving the contents page a thought through, professional look. This will make the reader feel like they spent their money on a worthy product. This will then be a reason for them to buy a later issue.

The page number of the articles will be the colour pink with the font type Verdana in the size 20. This makes the page number stand out. This is a feature I have adapted and developed from my research into similar products.

The article names will be emphasized in white to again make it pop out on the black background. The Font type will be Times New Roman giving it a traditional look, targeted for the entire audience. Times New Roman is a neutral font style that is easy to read and is not targeted a special age or gender. Together this will make the contents page contain more colours making the layout more interesting and attracting.  

            The background will be black. The use of this colour will not make the contents page depressing because of the bright colours represented in both text and images. This will prevent the magazine from becoming dull keeping the audience’s interest that was captured by the front page.

The pictures are especially picked out to go with the magazine articles. There will be a photo of “Tyson Woods” on the contents page since he is a feature of attraction persuading the audience to buy the magazine. This gives the reader an idea of who the article is about without even reading the text. The costume in the photo also helps the audience identify the magazine genre. The picture of Candy Girls is placed underneath the article about them. The photo of them is chosen to show varied shot and angles. Originally there was supposed to be a photo of Flo-Rida next to the competition article. This picture was removed on the background of it not being an original photo. The next photo on the contents page is of the imaginary group “MBX.” The article about them is of the shooting of their new music video for the song “911.” This photo will also be next to the article about them having the same effect as the other photos. The costumes are specifically chosen to represent the genre of the magazine. Underneath the photo of ‘MBX’ there will be a photo of last year’s winners of the competition of becoming the Bronx’s new artist/band. The two male subjects in the photo are dancing with joy and are known amongst the readers. Therefore their names need not to be written. Their hand symbols are referring to their competitors and are supposed to show how they beat the others and won. By having the image as a close-up the thrill and excitement of winning is clearly shown. The fact that one of the subjects has a darker skin tone makes him associable to the Hip-Hop and R&B genre as many artists and listeners are of the same skin tone.

The last photo of the contents page will be a bigger picture of Lil’C revealing that she is a bigger part in the issue. The picture is also the same as the free poster added in the issue. This way the reader can see how the poster looks like without searching for it. The pose Lil’C holds makes it look like she is going to climb out of the page like she can’t wait to reveal her gossip. This pose particularly appeals to the male audience but the fact that there is no nudity makes it appropriate and appealing to the female audience as well. All in all the photos makes it possible for the reader to know who the articles are about and who is to be featured in the magazine without reading the contents.

 Double spread

The “N’s” in “Contents” are drawn as an arrow pointing down towards the text on the page. The codes and conventions this written text tells the audience is to look further down on the page and read the contents. The colour of the ‘B’ will be different shades of blue in the same style as the front cover. The colour will match the font colour of the text on the page. This will create the same luxurious and professional associations as the front cover.  At the left side of the big B there will be written “The Bronx” in a vertical line. Since the magazine is new and not commonly known this is necessary to remind the readers what magazine they are reading.        

The article content of the magazine together with the competitions is divided into two main groups: “sweets” and “news.” This will mate the page look tidy. “News” and “Sweets” will be in the font type Arial black, in the size 28, in the colour grey so that it stands out on the page. The description of the articles will be blue to match with the headline giving the contents page a thought through, professional look. This will make the reader feel like they spent their money on a worthy product. This will then be a reason for them to buy a later issue.

The page number of the articles will be the colour pink with the font type Verdana in the size 20. This makes the page number stand out. This is a feature I have adapted and developed from my research into similar products.

The article names will be emphasized in white to again make it pop out on the black background. The Font type will be Times New Roman giving it a traditional look, targeted for the entire audience. Times New Roman is a neutral font style that is easy to read and is not targeted a special age or gender. Together this will make the contents page contain more colours making the layout more interesting and attracting.  

            The background will be black. The use of this colour will not make the contents page depressing because of the bright colours represented in both text and images. This will prevent the magazine from becoming dull keeping the audience’s interest that was captured by the front page.

The pictures are especially picked out to go with the magazine articles. There will be a photo of “Tyson Woods” on the contents page since he is a feature of attraction persuading the audience to buy the magazine. This gives the reader an idea of who the article is about without even reading the text. The costume in the photo also helps the audience identify the magazine genre. The picture of Candy Girls is placed underneath the article about them. The photo of them is chosen to show varied shot and angles. Originally there was supposed to be a photo of Flo-Rida next to the competition article. This picture was removed on the background of it not being an original photo. The next photo on the contents page is of the imaginary group “MBX.” The article about them is of the shooting of their new music video for the song “911.” This photo will also be next to the article about them having the same effect as the other photos. The costumes are specifically chosen to represent the genre of the magazine. Underneath the photo of ‘MBX’ there will be a photo of last year’s winners of the competition of becoming the Bronx’s new artist/band. The two male subjects in the photo are dancing with joy and are known amongst the readers. Therefore their names need not to be written. Their hand symbols are referring to their competitors and are supposed to show how they beat the others and won. By having the image as a close-up the thrill and excitement of winning is clearly shown. The fact that one of the subjects has a darker skin tone makes him associable to the Hip-Hop and R&B genre as many artists and listeners are of the same skin tone.

The last photo of the contents page will be a bigger picture of Lil’C revealing that she is a bigger part in the issue. The picture is also the same as the free poster added in the issue. This way the reader can see how the poster looks like without searching for it. The pose Lil’C holds makes it look like she is going to climb out of the page like she can’t wait to reveal her gossip. This pose particularly appeals to the male audience but the fact that there is no nudity makes it appropriate and appealing to the female audience as well. All in all the photos makes it possible for the reader to know who the articles are about and who is to be featured in the magazine without reading the contents.

The double spread in my magazine will be with the artist Lil’C. This imaginary female artist will be in the double spread presented as a new artist with recent hit songs and a new album. The double spread will be an interview with the new celebrity talking about her new album, the background of one of her songs, how the celebrity status has changed her as a person and the recent rumours about a love affair between her, P-Diddy and Timbaland. All these themes summons up what my target audience wanted to read about in the questionnaire.

            The artist’s name Lil’C relects the genre of the magazine. ‘Lil’ gives a view of the artist being short, something that is correct since the artist is only 5.5 ft tall. The fact that she is called Lil’C can give the association that she knows everything, that she can see everything.

            Lil’C has a ‘girl next door’ image making her popular with both genders. Her character has the same image as famous Hip-hop and R&B artists such as Ciara, Kesha and Rihanna (at the start of her career). This image has a known effect on boys making them obsessed in some way, often leaving them wanting to be her boyfriend. Girls on the other hand would like to be her. The effect the female artist has on boys make her look “superhuman” to the female gender and a role model. The desire the male gender have for her creates a jealousy and a desire for her life.

            Another factor making women look up to a female artist is clothes, make-up and the appearance of being perfect. By editing the photo the photographer can alter the artist’s skin, body and every feature into what is viewed, stereotypically, as “the perfect woman.”  This is view of being perfect creates a jealousy in women making them want to be as perfect. In this way they want to live the life of the artist making her their role model.

            The costume in the photo shoot will contain a pinkish red dress revealing some cleavage. This is done to draw in the male audience. At the same time the dress will not be too exposing. This way the photo will not appeal negatively to the female audience. This has its background in the common knowledge of how boys desire to see nudity while women don’t have the same crave. The fact that the colour of the dress is pink gives the female audience an association that the article is for them as well. Therefore the dress gives both genders what they want. Another factor in this decision is that Lil’C is a role model for young girls, a status that comes hand in hand with being a public character. It is therefore important to present her in the appropriate light.

            The picture on the first page will be more “goofy” than the others making her look less serious and more relaxed. At the same time the readers see another side of the artist and maybe see her in a different light. The fun side of her makes her even more interesting to the male audience making her not only beautiful but also fun to be around. This will make Maria better liked amongst the female audience. The pose shows that Maria is a normal girl making her less of a competition and more a person they would like to be friends with. The second picture will be of Maria biting her necklace. This is a sexier pose contrasting to the other photo showing another different side of her. Again the cleavage is shown to appeal to the male audience. This way the mise-en-scene of the double spread will have codes and conventions appealing to both genders and all ages, making the double spread look tidier and more interesting.

            Since the front cover and contents page have a dark background the double spread will have a lighter background contrasting to the other pages. This is done so that the magazine won’t come across as a rock/metal magazine. A plain white background was suggested but created a dull layout. Therefore a fill effect in a light grey to white tone was added. The grey colour started between the two pages and spread into the corners of the two pages into a white colour. This created some “life” in the background making the page look more interesting.

            The text will be in the colours blue and black contrasting to the light background. These colours are mainly associated with the male gender contrasting to the pink photos. This way the female colours of the photos are neutralized and the double spread comes across as targeted both genders. The heading will say: “Lil’C Close-Up.” This will summon up what the article is about: the new events in the artists life as well as the hidden truth. The headline will be made at www.dafont.com  in a graffiti style reflecting the genre of the magazine. This way the genre is easy to identify on all the pages. The colour of the font will be blue and so will the introduction. This attracts the audience’s attention to reading it since this is necessary to understand the article. The introduction makes the article suitable and targeted for everyone. The reader doesn’t have to know anything about the artist before reading the article. The short introduction paragraph is in the font style Tempus Sans ITC to reflect the headline. The font style emphasizes the graffiti effect of the headline helping to identify the genre.

            The interviewer’s questions are in the font style Times New Roman in the colour blue. Lil’C’s answers however are also typed in the font style Times New Roman, but are in the colour black. This shows the reader the important difference between the interviewer’s questions and Lil’C’s answers.

            Before the article starts it is written that “we” (as in the journalist) met Lil’C asking her some questions. By writing “we,” instead of “I” or our journalist, this makes the audience feel like they are a part of the interview. To underline this fact “we” is in blue, Tempus Sans ITC in font size 20. The main part of the article is in the font size 11 making the text fit the best on the two pages allowing space for all the photos. The quote: “I never cheated on P-Diddy” is highlighted by making it purple, font size 25 and the font style Tempus Sans ITC. This quote draws in the audience making them want to read the article. The quote is especially powerful since there had obviously been going on rumours about this artist that she had cheated on P-Diddy. Something she claims she didn’t do.

            The article ends with information about where her album can be bought and that the reader can watch her interview on video on The Bronx’s webpage. There is also an image of her album cover making it easier for the audience to recognise the album in the shops. Underneath the cover image there is some information of when Lil’C’s next concert is and when they can purchase their tickets. To show the reader that this is the end the text is blue and bold.

            To make the text fit on both pages the first page will contain three text boxes while the second page only contains one and a third. This makes more room for photos on the second page. The text is especially fitted around the second picture making it look more tidy and easier to read than if the text would cover the picture. The way the text covers all the extra space on the pages makes the magazine worth buying, since they get a full and exclusive article for their money.

            At the top of the second page there is a section called spotted! This is a “filmstrip” where the readers can see where Lil’C has been seen during the last month. The filmstrip contains of three photos all taken at different locations. This gives a view of Lil’C in her dailylife given the reader a view of what she has been up to lately. The font style of “spotted!” is created at www.dafont.com. By putting each letter vertically down the page the margin space is taken to use. Like the headline font style, the font helps the reader identify the genre.

            All together the codes and conventions on my double spread will draw the audience’s attention with the use of colour, written language and images.
